The Lost River watershed, East and south of the Klamath Basin, is Modoc Country, straddling NE California and south central Oregon. A land of pines and junipers, marshes and dams, winds and fences, deer and cattle. The lichened basalt fragmented from old lava flows is often rough black, sometimes fine grained gray, then suddenly rainbowed russets, oranges, ochres, earth browns. Modoc and Klamath country rock art, petroglyphs, rock stacks, cairns, rings, and mortars tell of ancient ways and peoples in place from time immemorial.
